All lawyers are created equal, but they don't stay that way for long.  If you are charged with a DUI and don't want to just go in and plead guilty, then you need to make sure that you have an attorney that specializes in DUI defense.  Consider the following ideas before selecting a DUI lawyer.

  1. You need a DUI lawyer that really knows their stuff.  Seminars, SFST, Intox and other specialized training are a must.  Don't make the mistake of hiring someone that doesn't take the time to stay current with Georgia DUI law and new trial practice ideas.  Mr. Leonard has been NHTSA trained in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and is U.S. Department of Transportation certified on the Intoxilyzer 5000.
  2. Like it or not, knowledge of the law alone, will not get the job done.  Your lawyer will need to know the political landscape of the jurisdiction that you are charged in.  He or she must be familiar with the players that are involved with your DUI (the officer, the prosecutor and the judge).
  3. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.  A lawyer that charges too little and promises too much will likely not get the results you are expecting.  Your lawyer has a lot of work to do on your case and needs to be paid accordingly.
  4. Professional affiliations.  A good DUI attorney will most likely be a member of several different organizations.  Ask your lawyer if he or she is a member of any DUI or Criminal Defense professional organizations.
  5. Ask around the courthouse and see who the bailiffs, court clerks and lawyers recommend.
  6. Hire someone that you can actually get in touch with that will return your calls when you have questions.  You will probably want someone who is also somewhat computer literate so you can communicate with them when they are away from the office.  Mr. Leonard responds to e-mails both at home and on his Treo, even from court.

Leonard, Rickman & Holloway has a reputation in the legal community for excellent representation of all of our clients. This reputation is a product of each lawyer's tireless pursuit for justice for each client.
