A top California prison official is in trouble for drinking and driving. The undersecretary who oversees California parolees and adult and juvenile prisons has pleaded guilty to DUI. Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Seth Unger says an attorney for 47-year-old Scott Kernan entered the plea Thursday in Sacramento County Superior Court.
His sentence includes a $2,000 fine, 48 hours of community service and a DUI class.
Kernan returned to his old job Thursday after he was suspended for six weeks without pay following his June 7 arrest.
The California Highway Patrol stopped Kernan speeding in a state vehicle near his home in Rancho Murieta with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit of 0.08.
Kernan was appointed as one of three corrections undersecretaries in November 2008.
