A recidivist drunk driver and New Jersey resident will be heading to prison after pleading guilty to his 15th DUI in 22 years, the Associated Press reports. Shaun Campbell, 40, has allegedly had his driver's license suspected 78 times in his life, according to the article. The defendant is also facing DUI chargers in at least two other New Jersey cities.
Campbell told a judge on Tuesday that he had been drinking "quite a bit" of beer when he was involved in a car accident with a pickup in April. His SUV had crashed head-on into the other vehicle, which was carrying a man and his 4-year-old daughter, according to police. It was reported that neither of the pickup's occupants suffered any serious injuries.
At the time of incident, the defendant's blood alcohol level was reportedly .288 percent, which is more than triple the state's legal limit.
Prosecutors in the case have stated they will seek the maximum prison term for the alleged crime at Campbell's sentencing in August. He will lose his license again, this time for at least another decade.
Last month, New Jersey took steps to become the 12th state to require first-time DUI offenders to install an ignition lock device in their car to prove they are within the state limits to drive.
The question arises: Why hasn't he done previous jail time or had permanent license suspension prior to this latest incident?
