A man walking his dog Wednesday morning in west suburban Batavia, Ill was struck and killed by a recidivist offender on parole for a prior DUI conviction, and who was allegedly driving drunk once again. Edward Cook, 24, was charged Wednesday evening with aggravated DUI and reckless homicide, both felonies, and had bond set at $750,000 Thursday by Kane County Judge James C. Hallock, according to Chris Nelson, spokesman for the Kane County State's Attorney's office.
Batavia police, who listed Cook's home address as 1227 E. Wilson St. in Batavia, said he was also charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving on a revoked license and failure to give information or render aid.
The charges stem from an accident about 6:40 a.m. in the 1000 block of Woodland Hills Road. Cook was allegedly driving a white, four-door Acura south at a high rate of speed when he struck several mailboxes and then hit David J. Long, 57, who was walking his dog, Batavia police said.
