In a case reflecting the worsening incidences of female DUIs and DUI fatalities, a 15-year-old Naples girl has been charged in the death of a friend killed during drunken-driving traffic accident in Estero, FL. Karina Campbell has been charged with DUI manslaughter, three counts of DUI, driving without a valid license, unlawful speed and an unrestrained passenger, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The FHP is reporting that Campbell’s blood alcohol level was .165 when the crash on Broadway east and Sandy Lane occurred on March 28th.
Campbell is accused of driving a 1999 Ford Explorer down Broadway East at approximately 70 mph in a 30 mph zone, according to the FHP.
She hit the railroad tracks hard, and the car lifted into the air.
The tracks “are elevated about three feet above the highway,” said Cpl. George Kantor of the Florida Highway Patrol right after the accident “They hit that at about 70 mph. That’s a Dukes of Hazzard (stunt).”
When the car landed, it swerved on the road shoulder and then over-corrected into the lane. It began to turn and slide, crossed the roadway into the opposite shoulder. It ricocheted off three palm trees and flipped onto its back, ejecting Brandon Hulvey, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
Hulvey, 16, died two days later. Also injured in the crash was the right front passenger, Johnathan Woodworth aged 16.
