The Watsonville man suspected of being behind the wheel of a Hummer that jumped a curb Friday night and hit and killed a man has a lengthy criminal record, including many drug-related charges, court documents show. Reginald Wilcoxen, 43, was booked into County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing injury or death, felony DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter and resisting arrest.
Luis Ernesto Morales, 39, was walking to his Emeline Avenue area home from his brother's Ocean Street apartment when he was struck and killed around 9 p.m. while walking on the sidewalk on the west side of Ocean Street, near Soquel Avenue, according to police.
After witnesses confronted Wilcoxen, he fled the scene in the vehicle and called his 19-year-old son to come get him, according to police. Based on witness descriptions of the vehicle, officers found the Hummer less than a block from the accident scene and reportedly watched the father and son drive off.
When officers pulled the car over, the father fled on foot but was apprehended on Front Street, police reported.
The son, Jeremiah Wilcoxen of Richmond, was also arrested. He was booked into County Jail on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs and driving without a license. Police called him an accessory to the hit and- run.
Monday afternoon, he was no longer in custody at County Jail.
